This tamper takes a large variable out of the picture and allows you to focus on the grind. It has a really good weight to it and fits perfectly in the 54mm filter basket Breville uses. The tamper isn't designed to go to the bottom of the basket because it wouldn't be wide enough to compress the top part of the basket effectively. I attached pictures to show the height difference between the one the 870 comes with side-by-side as well as their depth when 16g of espresso is tamped using the LuxHaus 53mm. The Breville manual says to tamp until the silver part of their tamper is even with the top of the filter basket. You can see in the pictures that the LuxHaus PERFECTLY accomplishes this. Hope this helps for those unsure or think it doesn't fit. VERY happy with this tamper!
