Doubt turns into results
I'm a man in his 40's who recently lost 30 pounds and went from a 36 to a 30 inch waistline, getting fit, must be some type of mid-life crisis. As such, I've always been conscious of my super hairy arms, belly and legs. In early May of 2016, purchased the iLIGHT Quartz and started using it. In hindsight, I should have started the very first session at level 5. The power level does not seem to make a difference in the "snap" of the hot light, what seems to make the biggest difference is simply the skin type and location, some areas of the body are just simply more sensitive.
In this first round of epilation, I chose to do my feet, hands, arms, chest, abs and pits. I'll tackle my legs after this course. In this 3rd week, just today, I mentioned to my wife that maybe I should have bought the Tria Laser and that I chose this Remington IPL just for the surface area coverage. There may be some limitations that I may encounter as I press on, but wanted to write this review to provide encouragement to all of you out there who are reading all these reviews just as i read all the reviews before purchasing myself.
The success part: funny how things work out that I started to doubt the effectiveness of the treatment ... on the day I started doubting, I saw results! Yes, real results. The hairs in my pits are already starting to fall out after 1 treatment at level 1 and 2 treatments at level 5. Seemingly, the hairs on my tummy and arms are a bit tougher, I'm hoping for the same results within another session or two.
I also debated over the frequency of the treatments between the recommended time and my own excitement of epilation. The manufacturer and almost every hair removal spa says the frequency should be every 2 weeks. The doctors say this is good too because of the long hair growth cycle. I risked it, treated on the weekends, 3rd weekend.
Also, I guess I did another "no no" and overlapped the treatment area. Though I chose this unit for the large treatment area, it's still a fairly small area. I would not move the light to a full length away, would worry I would miss a line and I'd get a checkerboard, so just overlapped it by about 50% on each pass, so effectively, one area of the skin would get 2 flashes during the session.
Why be such a rebel? I was thinking about it all and came to my own conclusion that it is a home unit, it has a much more reduced power than a clinical model so the chances of really damaging yourself is practically zero ... even at 2x the frequency and 2x the coverge. I looked for the specs as to the amperage or power or watts or whatever. I did find some reference to several different models, not anything on Amazon, and makes simple sense that more power equals more effectiveness.
So, if you're thinking about the two models I was stuck between, the Tria Laser and the Remington IPL ... here's why I would consider the Laser: the laser is a deeper light so can get to the hairs that are deeper. The main disadvantage, from reading all the good reviews, is the battery life and very small treatment area, the actual treatment area is smaller than the opening of the laser lens. I'm going to continue with a few more sessions with the IPL, the main advantage of the IPL is that the pain isn't bad, just hot for a sec, it's powered so no battery worries, the lens is easy to clean, the unit is easy to learn and use.
Final bits of advice, if you flash and it doesn't hurt, the lens was too far away, move it to make better contact and flash, if you feel the hot, it's good, it's not bad, goes away quick, not like a burn, not like even touching something hot, it only hurts as long as the light is on ... what, about 1/1000 of a second? If on the more sensitive skin areas, redding is more prevalent. On other parts, after the treatment, the skin is barely pink if at all, but upon closer examination, you should see little pink/red circles around each hair follicle which may last for 1/2 a day or a day after the treatment, I look for these little red circles around each hair to gauge the effectiveness of the treatment.
Good luck everyone. Hope my comments added to your decision making process. I will wait another month, 4 more sessions, and then update my review.
