PRO-10 / R2000 / PRO-1000 Faceoff!
The best way to review this printer is to compare it to peers in its class I have also owned and have conducted A/B comparison tests with to see where each excels. I have included the PRO-10 as the first in the comparison. CANON PRO-10 - MSRP $699 PIGMENT based printer +Excellent quality on Fine Art & Matte paper +Very good color, but not as much pop/dynamic range as dye +Excellent black & white +Very good quality on Gloss, Semi-Gloss, and Luster paper -Non-matte paper requires an extra overcoat of gloss, which is one of the replaceable ink tanks. If you print on gloss/semi-gloss/luster primarily, you will be changing the gloss optimizer cartridge more than any other one. +Over 100 year lifespan on all papers, with the exception that pigment is more likely to chip, scratch, or flake if not protected by glass since it sits on top of the paper. +Water resistant +Fantastic build quality, fit and finish. Built like a tank. +Fantastic quality paper feed path, will take nearly any paper easily -Cannot print roll paper -Since it is pigment, less variation in finishes as ink sits on top of the paper. -Must be turned on every other week to prevent clogging. Turning printer on will be enough to prevent clogging with this printer. CANON PRO-100 - MSRP $499 DYE based printer +Excellent quality on Canon Platinum Pro Gloss, Semi-Gloss, and Luster paper +With above paper, photo will last 50 years framed or 300 years in photo album w/o fading +Very good quality on Matte and Fine Art paper, but... -No guarantee on fade resistance with fine art & matte paper since it is uncoated & porous +Excellent pop and dynamic range than pigment printers - great for posters! +Good Black & White, but it has a very slight brownish tint you would not notice unless you had a PRO-10/R2000 print to compare it to -Some papers are water resistant, but dye is much more prone to water damage than pigment +Fantastic build quality, fit and finish. Built like a tank. +Fantastic quality paper feed path, will take nearly any paper easily -Cannot print roll paper +Since it is dye, your prints will more closely take on the characteristics of the paper it is printed on as the ink is absorbed into the paper. +Can sit for over a year without printing or being turned on with no clogs EPSON R2000 - MSRP $599 -PIGMENT based printer +Excellent quality on Fine Art & Matte paper +Very good color, but not as much pop/dynamic range as dye +Excellent black & white -Very good quality on Gloss, Semi-Gloss, and Luster paper -Non-matte paper requires an extra overcoat of gloss, which is one of the replaceable ink tanks. If you print on gloss/semi-gloss/luster primarily, you will be changing the gloss optimizer cartridge more than any other one. -100+ year lifespan on all papers, with the exception that pigment is more likely to chip, scratch, or flake if not protected by glass since it sits on top of the paper unlike dye. -Water resistant -Good build quality, fit and finish. Oddly you need a spare parts box for this printer as things like the DVD tray and large paper tray do not slide into the printer as they do in the Canon printers. The roll adapter also must be stored seperately. -Fair quality paper feed path, has problems with some types of paper (for instance HP trifold matte paper gave it problems at times). Expect more paper jams with this one. -Can print roll paper for panoramic -Since it is pigment, less variation in finishes as ink sits on top of the paper. -Must be turned on and nozzle check pattern printed 1x/wk to prevent clogging. Has a reputation for clogging more than CANON, which may be due to smaller nozzle size. OVERALL, I felt if you want the best printer for all situations, having both a PRO-10 for black & white and very important photos, and a PRO-100 for highly saturated prints like posters is the best combination. I was not impressed with the Epson R2000 as a package despite its quality prints (similar to PRO-10 in quality). If you can only pick one, look at the PROs and CONs and pick which is best! :)
