Comparing to Rockwell Sonicrafter F30
I had an opportunity to compare this tool with Rockwell Sonicrafter F30
Both appeared to be excellent tools and you would have problem choosing the better one. The build quality is excellent in both tools, but there are differences in terms of features and performance. PC uses fast look which is far more convenient than on F30. You just push the lever, slide the blade in and you are done. It probably does not excerpt 1 ton of holding pressure like Sonicrafter but it does not need it as the lock mechanism is drastically different. F30 just presses the blade against the plate so the more pressure you get the less slippage you have. Porter and Cable on the other hand uses the slots in the blade to fix the position so the pressure does not have to be great. It is fast and convenient but ... you can only use compatible blades, which should not be a problem as the latest PC takes the Dewalt universal fit blades. Sonicrafter is less convenient but in theory can take any blade. Basically anything that has an appropriate size hole. As the slots on the blade are not required you probably can even make your own accessory, like some fancy awl, stuck bolt loosener, engraver etc. Use your imagination.
Now about performance. F30 is rated 3.5A while PC only 3.0A so they should not be compared directly. Also in the commercial video by Sonicrafter they claim that F30 and F50 have 4 and 5 oscillating degrees respectively and cut through the wood much faster. That is true. But... (again). By having a larger oscillating degree you loose fine control. The tool turns from a precision tool to a brute force power tool.
Despite that F30 has more powerful motor I noticed that surprisingly it gets hot much slower than PC. On the other hand Sonicrafter's handle vibrates so much that your jaw starts jumping up and down. This is despite the highly publicized Vibrafree Counterweight, which appeared to be a gimmick. PC vibrates much less. PC is packed in a better carrying box and has much more included accessories. It also has a depth restrictor that has many uses.
So the bottom line:
Porter and Cable is more convenient, more precise, has more features and vibrates less.
F30 is more powerful, overheats less and takes almost any blade. It also can cut deeper as the blade sits about 1 inch forward compared to PC.
You choose.
