A Perfect 11.75" Tall Potty for Camping
I just received this today but I am buying it as a replacement so feel comfortable to rate it 5 stars. This exact unit came with our fiberglass popup camper and lasted four seasons. We camp a lot and this potty is my wife's #1 most important feature. We kind of wore out the bellows on the original potty because every time we would store it under a bench seat, we'd bump the bellows against the latching mechanism. Gradually, this wore a small hole in the bellows and while it would still pump enough water, it would also leak a little bit of the water from the top rinse tank onto the floor. I don't think that's a design flaw, just an unintended consequence. And in four seasons, we have camped over 250 days so that's a lot of bumping to take it out every night. I uploaded a photo of my solution to lessen the beating on the bellows.
We use it at night (#1 only, and no toilet paper.) and it saves us trips to the woods or vault potty at night. It will last about 8 days for the two of us before needing to be emptied. We often empty it into a vault toilet and figure we are making an improvement in the smell of the vault! At home, we empty it into the toilet, but like another reviewer said, watch out for splashing.
I have put a small amount of the blue liquid (Aqua-Kem) into the rinse water tank, for a nice blue flush, but I don't think it makes any difference for smell and I am concerned it might not be good for the bellows pump. We often use a bleach wipe while camping if we think the bowl is a little ripe, that seems to work. It doesn't smell until after 5 nights usually. Another reviewer said when you first use it, it's the best-smelling thing in your camper and I agree. I usually put 2 ounces of Aqua-Kem in just before we leave home.
I did have some small problems with leaking from the base. I ended up tightening the cap with a rag wrapped around it for better grip. I would tighten it to the point where I thought I'd need a wrench to get it off at home and that usually stopped the leaking. I also looked for replacement gaskets but could not find anything. I noticed this model has a different gasket setup and so maybe this one won't leak and/or require superhuman strength to tighten. This new cap is also translucent so it looks like it will be a good indicator for how full it is.
I also put a little Vaseline on the flush gasket in the bottom of the bowl. I think someone else had recommended that. One time, the gasket got folded a little bit and didn't make a good seal, but that was over a year ago and I was able to straighten it out with a needle-nose pliers and it has worked perfect ever since.
One last thing, this unit is 11.75" tall, not 12.5". This is critical for us because it is stored under a bench seat that has exactly 12" of clearance. I kept reading the specs on different sites they all say 12.5". It is not. I ordered it figuring I could return it, but as soon as it came, I put it in the camper and it's a perfect fit.
