Here's why you want the 1 mg melatonin. 1 mg of melatonin is a physiological dose. Which is to say that if your body was operating normally, your body would release about 1 mg over the course of a few hours after the sun sets. If you take a 3mg dose or more, you're taking a sedative dose. You'll feel sleepy either way. The 3mg will initially be more effective but after a few days you will "habituate" to the high dose, your body will stop producing its own melatonin, and it'll become less effective. Higher doses can also cause wacky (and for me often disturbing) dreams. But with the 1mg, you don't habituate. If you take 1 mg daily, 3-4 hours before bed time you can train your body to get sleepy at a reliable time. The source for this was my cognitive behavioral sleep specialist and my own background in neuroscience and neuroanatomy. If you have a circadian rhythm disorder or are adjusting to shift work, this stuff is for you. If your sleep disorder is more about anxiety or depression or something else, you might want to look elsewhere. I just saved you $500 in doctors bills. Although seriously, I'm a person on the internet, so if you have health concerns see your doctor.
