Honestly, no one who takes a close look at this $40 fireplace insert is going to mistake it for a real fire. But no one is going to think a $3,000 ceramic gas fireplace insert is a real wood fire either. At least this one is made out of real wood. It looks nice. We're happy with it. My only complaint is if you look at it closely for any length of time you notice that the flame effect created by the rotating roll of foil repeats itself with every revolution. It's not obnoxiously obvious, but I tweaked it anyway to get rid of it. What I did was replace the little orange-red light bulb that came with the insert with one of the LED flame-effect light bulbs that are sold here on Amazon. The LED flame-effect bulb is a little brighter than the original bulb, albeit not nearly as bright as a real wood fire's light would be. It really enhances the flame effect and eliminates the repeating effect created by the foil roll alone.
