They work, but not exactly as described
These swabs are quite easy to use, just dip in household white vinegar to activate. In my experience however, the mustard colored swab does not change to pink/red/violet when exposed to lead. They do work though if used in a slightly different method. Instead of tapping excess vinegar from the swab before rubbing area to be tested, allow the cotton end to remain saturated. With the cotton end pointed downward, rub swab on the area, allowing liquid to build on surface. If the fluid remains mustard or brown color, the area is negative for lead. If, however, the fluid changes to pink/red/violet, lead has been detected.
