Absolutely gross - but works!
This is my first season with chickens. Having an urban coop, never really considered the excessive fly problem. It was bad. Went online to review my options and did my own experiment: two store bought traps, two homemade. This one was far and the way the winner. And I used the enclosed bait. Made the mistake of spilling some on my hands and the sidewalk while screwing the top on. Immediately the sidewalk was covered in flies. I hung it up, and went on vacation for 10 days. Came back to this thing nearly full, but also crawling with maggots. So, I don't know did I leave it out too long? Reviewers say they reused the container, but I couldn't bring myself to toss out contents and rinse out. It was too disgusting - and my husband said "your chickens, your problem" it was too gross for even him to deal. So I just bagged it up, tied a knot and placed it in the trash. Yes-will this be an expensive treatment plan, if I throw it out every time? I cannot see tossing the contents into a compost bin, or feeding this disgusting mess to my hens. If anyone has more experience, I'd love to hear it. But from this POV it worked and I'm ordering another.
