600 sq ft barn experience + parts list for propane tank listed
I have a 600 square foot barn that is only insulated with radiant barrier. I have tried electric heat and that 1500 watt limitation just can’t get the room to warm up. I ran this propane heater on high for 30 minutes and the barn went from 30 degrees (outdoor temperature) to a balmy 72 degrees. I actually had to crank it down. I was really impressed. The caveat - the darn moisture. Everything in the room was too cold (and well below the dew point with the Relative Humidity in the room) so I have a major condensation issue. It’s not surprising really since the trade off of burning propane is water. So while I am warm, my power tools are dripping wet.
This may not be an issue in a home that is say, in the 50s and you want to run this to take the chill out of the air.
I took one star off for durability because of the cheap aluminum elbow that it comes with. Toss it out. Get some cast pipe instead and proper thread seal. You’ll be good.
Here are the parts you'll need if you want to get this hooked up to a 20# propane tank:
A few items. Firstly this is the hose. SHINESTAR Low Pressure Propane Regulator with 12ft LP Hose for Type1 Gas Tank, BBQ Grill Replacement with 3/8" Female Flare Fitting for Grill, Heater, Fire Pit and Generator-CSA Certified https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M1OUM1P/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_pYtlCb83R94AX
At the end of the above hose is a 3/8” female flare fitting. You need a 3/8” male flare to 3/8” female NPT coupler.
Now you need a 3/8” NPT pipe. I got one long enough to go through my wall and into my crawl space where I store my tank.
Now you need a 3/8” female NPT to (I am trying to remember) 1/2” male flare elbow to connect to the pipe at the bottom of the heater. Don’t use that awful aluminum elbow the heater comes with.
You also need the yellow tape that is gas-resistant to seal the threads.
I got all of those parts, less the propane regulator, from my hardware store.
