We're chili heads in our house! We love watching Heat 101, Johnny Scoville, Brian Ambs, you get the gist. So naturally, when we found out about these 2020 Paqui One Chip Challenge chips we were on board. We already did the Tube of Terror, Samyang 2x Spicy Chicken Ramen, Al's Hot Chicken (hadn't done Howlin Ray's yet, the line is too darn long), the list goes on - we didn't pass this one up. At $6.99 the price was perfect so we got a few. The packaging is beautiful yet ominous. One paper cardboard coffin box, red on the outside and black on the inside. Inside lays one mylar pouch containing a single chip with the reaper's threats inscribed inside the box, what the rules are, and what to expect. What a fun box! You even get a banner to stick anywhere you wish to boast to your friends about beating the reaper. "Yeah yeah yeah! So how was the chip?" It was hot. Not the hottest we've ever had (by the way we've also tried the Genkiyaki Death Taco Challenge - I could only finish 4, the challenge demands 6). But it had that classic slow Carolina Reaper creep, that moderate burn that lulled me into a false sense of security... then it began rising... that hellish throat burn, waaaaay in the back of the throat. It climbed for a solid 3 minutes while my eyes teared up and my endorphins kicked in enough where I began giggling for no reason. There IS real reaper in there. This ain't no Dorito chump! That being said, where was my heat level? I'd give it a 5. For the record I only ate one and drank nothing with the chip. Had I eaten a bowlful I'd be in *bleep* full of hurt. What does the chip taste like? Freaking CARDBOARD! There's no flavor, no saltiness, there's dry charcoal powder on the outside of the chip (why?). Hence my one star off. So if you like really hot *bleep* run out now and get this chip. It won't disappoint. If all you've eaten your life is nachos with a few jalapenos sprinkled on top you need to stop reading this review RIGHT NOW and go get you some flamin hot Doritos and skip this chip.
