Amazing! Effectively heats and maintains temperature in poorly (?zero?) insulated house with bad wiring
This is pretty amazing. I was skeptical but desperate when I bought this, and I admit I was entranced by an ad that made it sound like it works using magic rocks (it turns out the quartz elements are not the conducting source that creates heat, but it's still cool). I live in a 900-ft cinder block house with zero insulation in the walls and one terrifyingly ancient built-in source of heat that I refuse to use because it's very ineffective and likely to kill us in the middle of the night. Also, our electrical wiring is nightmarish and typically I cannot run a space heater in the living room and have the TV on at the same time. Needless to say, last winter was very cold and unpleasant.
This heater is awesome! It has been in the 20s F and I have usually been running it on eco to avoid overloading the breaker but for some reason have also been able to run it on high, if it's the only thing plugged into in a dedicated pair of outlets. It heats and maintains the temperature in my whole house. On eco, probably because my house is uninsulated, it seems to take a little while to heat the house but unlike regular space heaters, which only heat the immediately surrounding area and seem to infinitely dissipate and never fully heat a big room, this does actually heat a whole open area and keep it at the set temperature. It is also much quieter than regular space heaters and it is not super hot to sit in front of, although obviously the area around it needs to be clear for safety reasons. Since this is effective at the eco setting of 500 watts, and my old space heaters were ineffective at 1500 watts, I am sure this will not lead to awful electrical bills. It is also not as loud as regular space heaters but you can still hear it.
In sum, having this is like living in a good house with insulation and a real thermostat and working heating system again. It's fabulous.
I am slightly freaked out when I wake up in the morning and go into the living room and don't need to grab a coat.
