Smell is normal due to the true wool used in this. Doesn't bother me. I love the green color. Love it so far. Use it in the mornings to sit on our deck. I started using it in March and in CO we get really chilly mornings in March. Right now it's May and 37° and I am perfectly warm. Definitely a heavy blanket. Would be nice for camping or backpacking if you don't plan on using a sleeping bag and use this and a higher rated R value thermarest pad (what some people do--I'm just not brave enough yet). But overall I love this and feel like it is a legit money well spent. Not a cheaply made product that won't last--this feels like it will last my lifetime for sure. Haven't washed it yet as the directions say not to wash very often--the smell doesn't bother me. It's not very strong smelling.
