I never thought I’d be able to play the Sax again
Last year I found out I would never play sax again...
After 26 years of playing sax, a brain tumor/facial nerve surgery injury made it impossible for me to play sax anymore as I could no longer create a proper tight embouchure/make any noise....
I hung up my sax and came to terms with never playing again...
11 months later (during my continued recovery) I saw a picture online of the YDS-150 and decided to see if this would somehow allow me to play....I didn’t have high hopes...
A couple weeks ago it came in...
I opened it up to see what looked like a nice quality instrument made of high quality plastic and Brass....
I turned it on....put it to my mouth and layed down the fingering for a G#...I blew air into the mouth piece with my lazy partial paralyzed mouth embouchure....
A tear fell from my eye as I heard the G#.
“IT WORKS!!...IT WORKS!!! I CAN PLAY AGAIN!! “
G# G# G#!!!! I then broke into a sloppy excited emotional Improv haha
I never ever thought it would happen....never in my life did I think I’d play again...
Yamaha.....you made this possible...I cannot thank you enough:) I’m sure those with facial muscle disabilities that impact embouchure weren’t a target market...With that said...I can’t thank you all enough for making this instrument a reality for all sorts of people.
You’ve saved an important part of my life I never thought I’d experience again...
so many great things about this sax...i’ll just touch on a few...
1. It plays and feels like a sax...because it is one!
2. Sounds esp amazing through headphones/PA/Amps...esp love it through my Fender 57 champ.
3. The keys are wonderfully balanced/legit
4. It doesn’t play for you...you have to be very tight with your playing...this is a great thing IMO as it teaches you to be a better player on your acoustic sax....esp for those who may rely too heavily on slurred notes ;)
5. Those with slight mouth/breathing disabilities may be able to play if they can blow into the mouth piece....even with my facial paralysis/air leak out the side of my mouth I can play.
6. Practicing with headphones is wonderfully comfortable on the couch while watching TV/Movie.
7.Just give this thing a try! I never thought (even after seeing videos) that it would feel like I was really playing a sax....i thought it may feel like a sax simulator... I was/am still so pleasantly surprised.
Lastly....this is all coming from a bit if an analogue junkie...
Thanks:)
