Really cool! But beware of Pandora’s Box
My wife just got her 23 and Me results back, and the results are really cool. She thought she was 50/50 English and German but it turns out she’s 50% English and only 15% German. Turns out she has about 15% Polish Jewish and the remaining smaller pieces elsewhere (like 2% Neanderthal...which makes sense on her lack of sense of direction! Lol). It also gave some other metrics like if she’s at higher risk for thinks like AFib, hypertension, migraines, etc. really eye opening. I’m considering getting a kit for myself now.
The whole process is very easy. Spit into a test tube and box it up in the self-addressed postage-paid box. Full results were available in about 3 weeks.
Edit - so my wife just received a shock. She always knew she was conceived via IVF but it turns out her genetic father was actually a donor and not her real father. One of the other half-siblings reached out to her (one of 17 known half-siblings). The half-sibling had been in contact with the donor father which is really interesting. But just a lot to take in. Be sure to take this into consideration before opening Pandora’s Box. She still think it’s a cool experience, just make sure you’re aware of any and all potential surprises/family secrets.
