Great product, but please read warning in this review!
****UPDATE!**** IF YOU HAVE A SMALL DOG OR PUPPY PLEASE READ!
I'm not lowering my star rating for this review because it's still a good product and it's certainly not the manufacturer or seller's fault, but we did have a very scary mishap that I wanted to warn others to be cautious about! As I stated in my original review below, I have a young Pomeranian puppy (about 10 weeks now). He adored these chew rings, but yesterday I woke up to him somehow having managed to get one of them over his head and stuck around his neck! I didn't panic at first because there was plenty of room to slide my fingers between the chew and his little neck, so it wasn't restricting his breathing whatsoever. He was basically wearing it like a collar and didn't even seem to notice it was there as I searched to find something strong enough to cut thru the thick chew (scissors couldn't cut thru it and I couldn't get it to slide back off his head manually due to all his furry fluff of a mane). However, within mere seconds of me looking away he also managed to somehow get his lower jaw stuck under it! So his mouth was basically clamped open by this chew ring similar to a horse's bit! His little mouth was being held open by the chew around the back of his head and the rest was tightly pulling against the back of his mouth as his jaws were wide open and his lower jaw was pressed against his neck (I hope that visual makes sense). I absolutely panicked! I tried to get it off manually again, but that clearly wasn't happening and I didn't want to hurt him. Thankfully my dad was at the house and he was able to find bolt cutters to cut it off! The poor puppy was understandably freaking out and making the most horrible sounds! I damn near had a heart attack seeing him like that, but we were able to get it cut off quickly and he was thankfully just fine and went right back to his happy and playful self.
Again, this isn't a criticism of the product itself, but it's a hazard I wanted to alert others to. If you have a puppy or a smaller breed, PLEASE cut these chews in half before giving them to your pup! Had I not been right next to him when this happened it could have been horrific.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
I cannot begin to tell you how happy I am with this product! I have a 9-week-old Pomeranian puppy who is a very rambunctious chew monster, so even with many toys to choose from he still clamps down on my hands and arms constantly like a little piranha! He's tiny, but wowza those baby teeth pack a punch! 😲 Like most puppies, he has the attention span of a fruit fly. He'll get easily bored after a few chomps on a toy and then want to go right back to making me his human buffet. So needless to say I went on Amazon in the hopes of finding something that would be a little more enticing to him and came across these.
I knew he needed something with a little flexibility and "give" so he could massage his gums and relieve the urge to chew, which these have. I bought him several toys at once and to my elation he actually wound up liking them all, but these chicken teething rings are HANDS DOWN his favorite. They hold his attention much longer than most toys. I make sure to discard any small pieces he chews off just to be safe and avoid a choking hazard since he's still so small and clumsy. They are also the perfect size and shape for his little stature. He's able to more easily maneuver and carry them and he likes playing tug of war with it. He also clearly loves the chicken flavor.
As far as size and durability, if your puppy is very large or an aggressive/strong chewer, these won't hold up. Although my puppy is an aggressive chewer, he's so petite that he just doesn't have the strength to really devour toys yet, but even for him he's making little teeth indentations in it gradually and has made his way thru about 1/3 of a ring in a couple of days, so I'm sure a bigger pup would make quick work of these. Definitely not for bigger or stronger breeds.
I've included a couple photos for size comparison. And yes, he's wearing diapers, lol. Because he's still so young he doesn't have great control of his little bladder just yet. 🙂
Hope this review helps. :)
SIDE NOTE: This is unrelated in any way to these chew rings, but if you have an extremely aggressive/strong chewer I would recommend staying AWAY from Nylabone products. I say this because I've been reading countless reviews on Amazon for Nylabone products that broke apart easily and wounded or even killed their beloved pets! So please be sure to read reviews and do your research before buying ANY toys! It's not worth your dog being hurt or killed.
