$199 plus a free year of Prime? I'll bite the bullet.
Was planning on upgrading my iPod touch this holiday season, but I saw that there was now an unlocked Fire Phone. For $199 I could get a 32GB iPod Touch, or a Fire Phone. I can play music on both devices. I can stream music on both devices over WiFi (I don't use data, so mobile streaming wasn't a factor). I purchase more music through AmazonMP3 than I do iTunes. I dig the Free Prime Music, as well. Not sure if that is on the iOS app. The Camera ability on the Fire Phone is far superior, not only because of the megapixels (13mp vs 5mp), but because it has FLASH. The built-in audio playback is significantly better on the Fire Phone. Free year of Prime with purchase of Fire Phone (phone is essentially $100 at this point). My Prime was up next month, so I essentially saved $99 going with Fire Phone over iPod. I have the option to buy a data package and use mobile internet if I choose, with Fire Phone. No such option with an iPod. It was really a no brainer to choose Fire Phone in my case. Dynamic Perspective is interesting. I only received the phone about 5 hours ago, so I haven't gotten a whole lot of time to check out features and secrets. I will say, all the tilting shortcuts are nice, but a little tricky at first. I could live without them, but I'm sure they will become second nature. Take the 1 star reviews with a grain of salt. Those people seem to have their own agenda, which doesn't seem to involve owning the product and giving an actual review. Amazon did not delete reviews. This is a separate listing from the AT&T phones and this Unlocked GSM product version was released on Nov 25, 2014. And, while I would agree with the bad reviews on the more expensive AT&T versions and be pissed if I renewed my contract for two years for this phone, too, this really is a good deal at $199, even without the Google Play store. I will try to update as I get used to the phone, but I can't honestly imagine myself rating it lower than 4 out of 5 stars. UPDATE 12/10/14: I ordered another phone and it came on the same day that my Amazon FireTV stick came in and the FirePhone works great as a remote. My wife has the first phone, so this past week has let me to test it out more. Firefly is kind of cool. I only messed around with it a little so far, haven't tried it on music yet. I mirrored the phone to my TV and convinced my kids they were covered in germs and needed to take a bath. I don't think Amazon intended FireFly to be used in such a manner, but it was effective. They have some Apps that I couldn't get on WP8, that I have gone without for the past year and a half. Also, YouTube pulls up fine on the Silk Browser, so I'm not sad about there not being an App for that. The YouTube app for WP8 was more like a plug-in. For me, going from WP8 to FireOS, I really haven't seen any drawbacks, though I did rather like Live Tiles, I can get used to the carousel. I just need to figure out how to get Podcasts and I'll be set. Update: My FirePhone is still kicking. RMA'd it Aug 2015 as the logicboard/motherboard had an issue with reading SIM card. This RMA took place when Amazon was offloading their remaining inventory of FirePhones (for about $119?) and shortly thereafter, the product became permanently unavailable. Since the initial review, I figured out how to get the Play Store installed. Not all apps work (Taco Bell and as of Sept 2016 Safeway App) but Hearthstone works and Pokemon GO works. The phone does run hot on Pokemon, but with a gentle fall breeze, this is not an issue. Still liking the phone until total app support is lost. At that time, I may move toward Googles ProjectFi.
