great camera for a great price
I ordered this backup camera and monitor for my 05 Silverado. Running the camera feed cable from the rear of the truck into the cab was a bit tricky, but any backup system would offer the same challenge. I have waited a couple months before reviewing this to be sure it would last. So far, everything is still working just fine. I like how the camera itself can swivel up or down for tuning to your personal needs. I pull a boat and this makes it very easy to back up right to the trailer. I simply angle the cam down so I have a clear close view of the hitch and can back up to the perfect spot every time. Another cool feature is that there are 2 video inputs. One is dedicated to the rear camera and the other is an aux input. You can feed any other video source into the aux input and it will display all the time except when the vehicle is put into reverse. As soon as you take the vehicle out of reverse, the display automatically switches back to aux input. You have the flexibility of installing a second camera somewhere else on the vehicle to allow a view all the time except when in reverse. The display will show the rear camera only when you are in reverse or rather when the rear backup lights power on the camera. In other words, anytime the camera is powered on, the display will show it. So I decided to run another switched 12v power feed to the camera that I can turn on whenever I want to from within the cab. Sometimes its nice to be able to see what's behind you without having to put it in reverse. The only, and I mean the only, bad thing I can say about this unit is that the pedestal for the monitor is limited in its range of motion but probably ok for most installations. But the real problem is that the 3M tape used to mount the monitor to the dash (or where ever you chose) just doesn't hold up. When I finished my installation, everything looked great and no cables or wires were visible and the monitor was mounted to the face of the dash below the heater controls. When I returned to the truck about 2 hours later to leave, the monitor was hanging by the cable because the double sided tape just wasn't strong enough to stick. (And yes, I cleaned the dash thoroughly with alcohol before applying the adhesive tape) I eventually had to drill 2 small holes and screw it to the underside of my dash near the floor. Its still easy to see and has some range of motion, but I just hated drilling 2 tiny holes in my dash, even though they wouldn't be visible if I removed the monitor. At least I know now that I won't find my monitor hanging by the cable when I get into my truck. The unit as a whole is working great and provides me that extra sense of security knowing I won't back over one of the kid's bikes or worse, a kid. Don't be discouraged by anyone who gives this item a bad review simple because they had difficulty installing it. Any system you buy will come with the same challenges. For vehicles that do not have factory backup cameras, I definitely recommend this system
