Best deal on a PTFE/Teflon spray lubricant
I've used Elmer's Slide-All teflon lubricant for years. Teflon lubes will not attract dirt, as regular WD-40, 3-in-One Oil or many other lubricants would, and can be sprayed into places where it would be hard to get graphite to go. Also, unlike graphite, it dries clear, almost invisible, and tends to stay where it's put. There are several companies which make a teflon-based dry lube.
The WD-40 product has several advantages:
- its the cheapest teflon lube I could find
- the built-in spray tube is a huge help
- its available in places like Lowes and Home Depot with other WD-40 products
One thing to watch out for: the dry lube itself is totally non-reactive, and will work on pretty much anything. But the solvent used to carry it will melt some plastics, such as the threads on a battery powered gadget I lubricated last week. In a case like this, you might be able to spray a paper towel, let most or all of the propellant evaporate, then rub it on the plastic item you want to lubricate.
Competing products include:
- DuPont Teflon Nonstick dry-film lubricant
- 3M 08897 Silicone lubricant (dry type)
- Superlube 31110 Aerosol
- Elmer's E450 Slide-All
- CRC03044 Dry PTFE Lubricating Spray
